“In any system, there are going to be weaknesses, there are going to be people who make mistakes. If you want to bring out the best in people, then constantly hammering them on that is not going to get you moving forward.”
“I do often reflect on the fact that almost every politician in the valedictory speeches when they leave parliament, says that their biggest regret is that they didn’t spend more time with their family.”
“I’m sure if you went to New South Wales and said … ‘What would you do differently, if you could go back and make those decisions?’ I suspect they would say ‘we would have locked it down earlier.’”
“certainly changed some of my views on politics. I’ve always enjoyed the cut and thrust of politics, but I think politics in a global pandemic is a different thing. I’ve become a much more moderate, conciliatory person as a result of doing this,”
“We were getting close, we were heading in that direction until Delta showed up.”
“That public buy-in and goodwill is the only way that this works.”
“We’ve been asking people to live with uncertainty for 18 months … People are tired.”
“The way Jacinda has been treated, particularly by some segments of our society – and they are a small minority – has been utterly abhorrent. “We as men have a responsibility to speak up about that,”
“We often leave it to women to say ‘this isn’t OK, and I don’t feel OK about that,’ and many women don’t feel comfortable talking in that way. So I think we as men have a responsibility to call it out when we see it.”
“Covid-19 and the global pandemic created a health crisis, and now it’s created an economic one – and that’s where my government’s focus will be. “Our focus will be on the right now, on the bread and butter issues that people care about. Some people, many people are hurting at the moment, and I want them to know that we are on their side.”
“It’s a big day for a boy from the Hutt.”
“maybe I don’t have the best fashion sense in parliament”
“I’ve become a much more moderate, conciliatory person as a result of doing this. It forces you to recognise that no human beings are perfect, that in any system there are going to be weaknesses, people are going to make mistakes. “I have become a bit more pragmatic than I maybe was previously – maybe even a bit kinder, to take a leaf out of the prime minister’s book.”
“not gonna start making announcements only a couple of hours into the job”
“It continues to be one of the biggest intergenerational challenges that we face. So you expect to see my government continuing to make sure as we owe it to future generations that we do everything we can to tackle that challenge.”
“It is the number one priority that we are facing as a government and they will see tangible evidence of this,”
“I’m energised and excited by the challenges ahead.”
“This includes for medical treatment if a mother is overseas and cannot get the required treatment where they are, and allowing people to urgently return to New Zealand to provide critical care for a dependent, such as their spouse or partner who is pregnant.”
“Ideally, I think in time, New Zealand will become a fully independent country ... I don”
