Muhammad Ali was an Ottoman military commander, statesman, and governor who became the de facto ruler of Egypt from 1805 to 1848. He founded the Muhammad Ali dynasty, which ruled Egypt and Sudan for more than a century, and is widely regarded as one of the central figures in the creation of modern Egypt.
