In 2012, Time reported that in one of the meetings of prominent Islamist militant groups attended by the leaders of Ahrar al-Sham, Suqour al-Sham, Liwa al-Islam, and other rebel brigades, al-Sharaa wore a mask, refusing to reveal his identity, and was introduced to the attendees by Jabhat al-Nusra's emirs in Aleppo and Idlib.
